Black History Month 2024: Celebrating Black Innovators in Technology
October marks Black History Month, a time to reflect on the incredible contributions of Black individuals to society. This year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, asks us to revisit history and shine a light on the often-overlooked stories of Black innovators. It’s about recognising those whose achievements have shaped our world. In this blog we’re highlighting technologists, whose work has transformed industries and improved lives, from pioneers in computing to champions of sustainability. Dr. Omowunmi Sadik
Dr. Omowunmi Sadik is a pioneering Nigerian-American scientist recognised for her groundbreaking work in nanotechnology and environmental chemistry. As a professor and founding director of CREATES at SUNY Binghamton, she developed cutting-edge sensors to detect environmental toxins, with a focus on protecting underserved communities. She was the first African woman elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and holds multiple patents. A strong advocate for diversity in STEM, Dr. Sadik has mentored many underrepresented students, reshaping the narrative around inclusion in science and inspiring future generations to break new ground in technology and innovation.
Roy Clay Sr.

Roy Clay Sr., known as the “Godfather of Silicon Valley,” is a pioneering technologist whose contributions to computing have shaped the tech industry as we know it. Born in segregated Kinloch, Missouri, in 1929, Clay overcame racial barriers to earn a degree in Mathematics and became one of the first African Americans in Silicon Valley. Leading the development of Hewlett-Packard’s first minicomputer in the 1960s, Clay helped lay the foundation for modern computing. He later founded ROD-L Electronics, setting crucial safety standards for IT products. Beyond his technical achievements, Clay was a powerful advocate for diversity, mentoring young Black engineers and pushing for inclusion in tech. Clay’s legacy serves as a powerful reminder of how one individual’s brilliance and determination can drive technological progress while breaking down barriers. His contributions to early computing, along with his advocacy for diversity in the tech industry, continue to inspire future generations of innovators and leaders.
Marie Van Brittan Brown
Marie Van Brittan Brown, a pioneering African American nurse and technologist, forever changed home security with her invention of the first closed-circuit television (CCTV) system in 1966. Concerned about rising crime in her Queens, New York neighborhood, Brown developed a revolutionary system that used cameras, monitors, and a two-way microphone, allowing homeowners to see and communicate with visitors from inside their homes. Her patent laid the foundation for modern security systems used in homes, offices, and public spaces worldwide. Despite the groundbreaking nature of her work, Brown’s contributions have often been overlooked in mainstream tech history. Brown’s invention, which remains a cornerstone of contemporary surveillance and home safety, not only addressed immediate community concerns but also empowered individuals to take control of their own security.
Dr Mark Dean
Dr. Mark Dean is a pioneering technologist whose groundbreaking contributions have significantly shaped modern computing. As one of the lead engineers behind the development of the first personal computer (PC) at IBM in the early 1980s, Dean played a key role in designing the architecture that laid the foundation for today’s PC systems. Born in Jefferson City, Tennessee, in 1957, Dean earned degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee and Stanford University, becoming one of the first African American engineers at IBM. Dean holds three of the original nine patents for the IBM PC and led the team that developed the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus, which allowed peripheral devices like printers and keyboards to connect to computers. Later, he spearheaded the development of the first gigahertz microprocessor, significantly advancing computing power. Beyond his technical achievements, Dean has been a vocal advocate for STEM education and diversity in tech, mentoring underrepresented engineers and pushing for more inclusive opportunities in the industry. Dr. Gladys West
Dr. Gladys West is a trailblazing African American mathematician and technologist whose groundbreaking work in satellite geodesy has been instrumental in the development of GPS technology. Born in Virginia in 1930, West earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Virginia State University and went on to a distinguished career at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, where she was part of a team that developed algorithms for satellite data analysis. Her contributions were vital to the creation of accurate models of the Earth, enabling the precision navigation that underpins today’s GPS systems. Despite her pivotal role, West’s achievements were largely unrecognised for decades. In 2018, she was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame, acknowledging her significant impact on technology and navigation. Dr. West’s legacy serves as an inspiring reminder of the contributions of Black women in science and technology, encouraging future generations to follow in her footsteps.
Clarence ‘Skip’ Ellis
Clarence “Skip” Ellis was a trailblazing computer scientist, best known for his groundbreaking contributions to the development of collaborative software. Born in 1943 in Illinois, Ellis became the first African American to earn a PhD in Computer Science, which he obtained from the University of Illinois in 1969. His pioneering work focused on groupware—software that allows multiple users to collaborate on a single task in real-time. While at Xerox PARC in the 1970s, Ellis helped develop OfficeTalk, an early groupware system that laid the foundation for today’s collaborative platforms like Google Docs and Microsoft Teams. His work on distributed systems and operational transformation continues to influence modern computing. Throughout his career, Ellis was also a dedicated educator and mentor, advocating for more inclusivity in the tech industry and encouraging underrepresented students to pursue careers in computer science. His contributions highlight how innovation in computing can redefine work and collaboration, while his efforts to promote diversity in STEM encourage future generations to pursue similar paths.
Jasmine Crowe
Jasmine Crowe is an innovative entrepreneur and technologist dedicated to leveraging technology for social impact. As the founder and CEO of Goodr, a tech-driven food waste management company, she has created a platform that connects businesses with surplus food to local charities, ensuring that excess food is redistributed to those in need rather than going to waste. Crowe’s work addresses food insecurity and promotes sustainability, making a significant impact on communities across the United States. A passionate advocate for social justice and equity, she has been recognised for her efforts to use technology as a tool for positive change, earning accolades such as being named a 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree in the Social Impact category. Her commitment to reclaiming narratives extends beyond her business; she actively mentors aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women and people of color, encouraging them to harness technology to address societal challenges. Jasmine Crowe’s legacy is one of empowerment, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of equity, inspiring future generations to reshape the narratives around technology and its potential for good.
Granville T. Woods
Granville T. Woods, often called the “Black Edison,” was a pioneering inventor whose innovations in electrical engineering revolutionised transportation and communication systems in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1856 in Columbus, Ohio, Woods was largely self-taught and held over 50 patents throughout his career. His most notable invention was the “multiplex telegraph,” a device that allowed moving trains to communicate with stations and each other, significantly improving railway safety and efficiency. This invention laid the groundwork for modern train signaling systems. Woods also developed numerous other innovations, including an improved version of the electric railway and a more efficient steam boiler. Despite facing racial barriers, Woods successfully defended his patents against challenges, including from Thomas Edison. Beyond his technical achievements, his work played a vital role in advancing infrastructure in America during a time of rapid industrial growth. Woods’ contributions exemplify how creativity and determination can drive significant advancements in engineering, inspiring future generations of inventors and innovators.
Regina Gwynn
Regina Gwynn is a pioneering technologist and entrepreneur celebrated for her contributions to the intersection of technology and fashion. As the co-founder and CEO of TresseNoire, a digital platform dedicated to connecting Black women with hair care professionals, Gwynn has successfully addressed the unique challenges faced by women of colour in the beauty industry. Her platform not only empowers consumers to find stylists who understand their specific hair needs but also promotes visibility for Black-owned businesses. With a background in both technology and business, Gwynn has been a driving force in promoting diversity in the tech industry. She is a passionate advocate for inclusion and equity, leveraging her experiences to mentor aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women of colour. Her work has garnered recognition, including features in major publications and honors such as being named a 2021 Innovator of the Year by NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists).
Jerry Lawson
Jerry Lawson was a groundbreaking technologist and engineer whose innovations significantly shaped the video game industry. Born in 1940 in Brooklyn, New York, Lawson developed an early passion for electronics, which led him to study engineering and eventually work at Fairchild Semiconductor in the 1970s. As the head of the company’s video game division, Lawson designed the Fairchild Channel F, the first home video game console to feature interchangeable cartridges, a revolutionary concept that paved the way for future gaming systems. His work not only transformed how games were played but also set the standard for game distribution and development in the industry. Beyond his technical achievements, Lawson was a vocal advocate for diversity in technology and gaming, mentoring young engineers and emphasizing the importance of representation in STEM fields. By reclaiming his narrative, we acknowledge Lawson’s vital contributions to gaming history and celebrate his role as a trailblazer who inspired generations to pursue their passions in technology and engineering.
Dorothy Vaughn
Dorothy Vaughan was a groundbreaking African American mathematician and computer programmer whose contributions were pivotal to the success of NASA’s early space missions. Born in 1910 in Kansas, Vaughan was a trailblazer for women in STEM, particularly for Black women, during a time of significant racial and gender barriers. After joining the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which later became NASA, she led a team of women mathematicians known as “human computers,” calculating complex equations that were crucial for the success of spacecraft trajectories. Vaughan became the first Black woman to supervise a group of staff at NASA when she was appointed as the head of the West Area Computing division. Her expertise in computer programming, particularly with the Fortran language, was instrumental as the agency transitioned from manual calculations to electronic computing. Posthumously, Vaughan has been recognised for her trailblazing work, including her induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2019. Her legacy continues to inspire future generations of women and people of color in STEM, reminding us of the vital roles they have played in shaping modern technology and exploration.
Walter Braithewaite
Walter Braithwaite is a renowned engineer whose pioneering work revolutionised the aerospace industry by transforming how aircraft are designed and manufactured. Born in Jamaica, Braithwaite moved to the U.S. and earned degrees in Engineering from various prestigious institutions, including New York University and the University of Washington. As one of the highest-ranking Black executives at Boeing, he led the development of the company’s Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems in the 1980s. This technology streamlined the aircraft design process, replacing manual drafting with digital models, and played a critical role in the production of iconic aircraft like the Boeing 777. Braithwaite’s innovations have not only shaped modern aircraft design but also set industry standards adopted by manufacturers globally. Beyond his technical expertise, Braithwaite has been a champion for diversity and inclusion within engineering and aerospace, mentoring countless underrepresented engineers and advocating for greater equity in STEM fields. His legacy serves as a testament to how visionary leadership and innovation can not only drive technological progress but also open doors for future generations of diverse talent.
Simon Ighofose
Simon Ighofose, CEO of PyroGenesys Ltd, is a pioneering black technologist from the UK whose innovative approach to technology is transforming the energy sector. With a strong background in engineering and sustainable technology, Simon has been instrumental in developing advanced solutions that enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints. His leadership at PyroGenesys is characterised by a commitment to fostering diversity in the tech industry, as he actively mentors young professionals and advocates for increased representation of underrepresented groups in STEM. By reclaiming narratives of excellence and empowerment, Simon not only drives technological progress but also inspires future generations to pursue careers in engineering and sustainability.
